HOW TO HEAR THE VOICE OF GOD: PEOPLE

The Old University Professor

  1. You are surrounded by witnesses (Hebrews 12:1; Pics of Godly Father, Mentor, Friend)
  2. God is speaking to you through them (2 Samuel 7:2-3; 2 Samuel 7:4-7,17; How to Hear the Voice of God; 1 Chronicles 22:7-8; 2 Samuel 12:7; 1 Chronicles 3:5; People God Speaks Through; Katherine Johnson; 1 Corinthians 16:10; 2 Timothy 1:7; How to Evaluate What We Hear)
  3. Doing often precedes hearing (Hebrews 12:1; Philippians 2:20; Hebrews 13:23; Ty Koehn; James 1:22; Quote)

Hebrews 12:1

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.

2 Samuel 7:2-3

2 The king summoned Nathan the prophet. "Look," David said, "I am living in a beautiful cedar palace, but the Ark of God is out there in a tent!" 3 Nathan replied to the king, "Go ahead and do whatever you have in mind, for the LORD is with you."

2 Samuel 7:4-7,17

4 But that same night the LORD said to Nathan, 5 "Go and tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD has declared: Are you the one to build a house for me to live in? 6 I have never lived in a house, from the day I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until this very day. I have always moved from one place to another with a tent and a Tabernacle as my dwelling. 7 Yet no matter where I have gone with the Israelites, I have never once complained to Israel's tribal leaders, the shepherds of my people Israel. I have never asked them, "Why haven't you built me a beautiful cedar house?"' 17 So Nathan went back to David and told him everything the LORD had said in this vision.

How To Evaluate What We Hear

  • Consider the source? (Galatians 5:22-23)
  • Truth in love? (Ephesians 4:15)
  • Is it illegal? (Romans 13:1)
  • Is it immoral? (Romans 13:10; Isaiah 8:20)
  • Is it Christlike? (Ephesians 5:1)

Hebrews 12:1

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.

Ty Koehn

I knew I had to say something. Our friendship is more important than just the silly outcome of a game. I had to make sure he knew that before we celebrated.

James 1:22

22 But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.
