Jesus' spiritual family...

  1. Grasps the foolishness of trying to save themselves (Luke 8:22-24a; John 5:30)
  2. Needs loving rebuke for trying to save themselves, for fear, and lack of faith (Luke 8:24b-25a; Mark 4:40; Mark 4:38)
  3. Knows Christ's righteousness brings peace (Luke 8:25b-26; Mark 4:39; Psalm 107:28-29; Isaiah 57:20-21; Isaiah 32:17)

Luke 8:22-24a

22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's cross to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and started out. 23 As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger. 24 The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!"

John 5:30

30 I can do nothing on my own.

Luke 8:24b-25a

When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm! 25 Then he asked them, "Where is your faith?"

Mark 4:40

Then he asked them, "Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?"

Mark 4:38 (KJV)

Master, carest thou not that we perish?

Luke 8:25b-26

The disciples were terrified and amazed. "Who is this man?" they asked each other. "When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!"

Mark 4:39

39 When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Silence! Be still!" Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.

Mark 4:39 (KJV)

39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

Psalm 107:28-29

28 "LORD, help!" they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. 29 He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves.

Isaiah 57:20-21

20 "But those who still reject me are like the restless sea, which is never still but continually churns up mud and dirt. 21 There is no peace for the wicked," says my God.

Isaiah 32:17

17 And this righteousness will bring peace. Yes, it will bring quietness and confidence forever.
